Profile for Susan Corbett

Susan has had an unconventional route to the training ranks. She does not come from a racing background and despite an early love of horses, her initial career choices were not in the racing industry.

Trained as a teacher she took a job instead as a journalist in the North East. That love of horses never waned though and she and her husband decided to set up a Stud Farm so that she could spend time at home with her young children.

Eventually, the training of horses evolved organically out of running the Stud Farm. Susan began training some of their own home-breds in Point-to Points. Her first winner was on 11th May 2011, Definite Appeal, ridden by her son James Corbett.

On New Year's Day 2012, the same horse gave Susan her first winner 'under rules' and there have been many winners follow since. She is fast approaching 100 winners over hurdles and chases. Although the Yard is primarily a National Hunt stable, Susan has also trained 24 winners on the flat.

The past few seasons have seen a really impressive set of numbers be posted from the stable. Running at over 10% winning strike rate, with numerous horses bringing home decent place money, the yard has a very consistent look and have improved the quality of the horses too.

Susan is surrounded by a great team at and there is a definite emphasis on it being a team effort.

Stables

The Stables at Girsonfield have been adapted to suit a number of different needs that are required at the Yard. There is still breeding that goes on from when the Farm was primarily a Stud Farm and there is accomodation to fulfill those needs.

The Yard has shifted empasis towards training horses and the 'training' stables are seperate from other areas of the Yard, they are though all very close together. It offers excellent, accessible facilities for all the needs of the well=being of the horses and a successful training operation.

It bpasts it's own All-Weather which incorporates a steady incline before turning at the top of the hill to allow a full view of the horses in action. As they come back down the gallop their is a stream that the horses paddle through. THis serves a dual purpose of cooling off the horses after their work and also cleaning off any of the All-Weather surface that has become stick to their shins.

The Yard has a walker, an All-Weather training circle and schooling fences. There are plans to upgrade both the All-Weather training circle and schooling facilities as well as the uphill gallop. There is a woodchip warm up paddock where the horses loosen up before heading out to work.

The original Farm Buildings have been adapted overtime to provide all the facilities needed for the training of happy and successful horses.
