Jim Boyle

Profile for Jim Boyle

Jim Boyle has been training racehorses in Epsom for the last twenty years and along the way has amassed a good strike rate and with a limited budget, brought along a number of quality individuals who have taken the yard to premier race meetings.

Having been training racehorses for over 20 years, Jim is based at the South Hatch Stables in Epsom, well within reach of London and its locales and he started with a job at the Sir Michael Stoute yard. Having got the training bug from that experience, Jim went on to gain experience in Middleham, Malton, and Lambourn, working for Paul Cole at one point before striking out on his own. This is a stable on the up, with an experienced trainer at the helm, and with state-of-the-art training facilities.

Jim, aided by his wife Pippa and his six stable staff, has a good win record and has trained plenty of winners around the London area, as well as at Epsom itself. He is a regular at Lingfield, Newbury, Sandown, Kempton, Brighton, Goodwood, Newmarket, and, of course, Epsom.

The yard has had a long history which dates back to 1900. More recently, Walter Nightingale trained the 1943 Derby winner Straight Deal. And Reg Akehurst sent out the 2000 Guineas hero Niksar from South Hatch. In total, the yard has seen 170 years of continuous use with Jim Boyle being the trainer there for the past twenty years.

2022 saw the South Hatch stables undergo a major re-development. Jim explains: “We have had a long-running planning process to try and knock down the yard and rebuild and start again, and build a brand new 60-box racing yard. We have finally got it through planning after many years of trying!” Planning permission was granted for a main yard stable complex of 40 boxes, a secondary stable block of 20 boxes, an isolation yard, a trainer and assistant trainer’s house, stable staff accommodation, horse walkers, muck pits, a therapy barn, a trotting ring and outdoor school, a lunge ring, turnout paddocks, a machinery store and storage barn and enabling residential development of 46 apartments.

Jim houses many of his members of staff on the premises, which helps with security and provides for a ‘family’ atmosphere in the yard. 2022 was a big year for the Epsom trainer, as it signalled a re-awakening of his yard, with the building of a whole host of new developments. Ownaracehorse is proud to be associated with Jim and Pippa, and his loyal group of stable staff, jockeys, and owners.
