Derek Shaw took out his full training licence in December 1991 having served his apprenticeship as Assistant Trainer to Roy Bowring and then as head lead to Bill Mackie. When assistant trainer to Roy Bowring Derek often doubled up as a jockey on the stables jumping horses.
Since being granted his licence he has been based in Nottinghamshire, near Newark. This gives easy access to a number of racecourses and he has Southwell right on his doorstep.
It is perhaps no surprise then to see that many of Derek’s winners are achieved on the all Weather, though he has tasted success on the turf with a number of decent horses.
Derek’s biggest success seems to be realising the potential of horses that may have limited chances in bigger yards. A typical example of this is Pharoah’s Gold a horse whose handicap mark hovered around the 50 mark, but was placed to land 5 races by his trainer and over £20,000 in prize money.
Please note that we are unable to provide a specific Ownaracehorse visit to the stables, but Derek is happy for shareholders to visit the stables when accompanied by an Ownaracehorse representative. Instructions are available in your Horse Manager to request a stable visit - which we run once every 6-8 weeks. |

Derek’s new racing base at Danethorpe, Nottinghamshire boats some wonderful modern facilities and having settled into these surroundings it would be no surprise to see Derek Shaw start climbing the ranks on the trainers list.
Among the facilities at his disposal he has a 1 mile Polytrack gallop and a swimming pool, in addition to a horse walker, weighing machine, indoor barns and plenty of paddock space.
He has around 45 horses in the yard and these are largely geared towards flat racing. Most of his winners are at sprint distances, though he does chip in with a fair number of horses who win at distances of over a mile. |
