Sarah's Art wins the Greys race at Newmarket
....................................................................................
August 2009
Trainer Stef Liddiard had always had the greys race in
mind for Sarah's Art since the gelding ran in the race last season, but
the difference this season was that he came into Saturdays race after
having already won three times in 2009.
Last year, the greys race was his opening run of the season and he had
needed the run, but after a knee operation the previous December, Stef
had working wonders to get him back so quick anyway. However, the
hortse has done nothing but provide great action for his shareholders
since.
Saturdays race was run over six furlongs straight up the July course at
Newmarket, and with live coverage on Channel Four and over 40
shareholders at the track, the pressure was on the grey to perform in
his target for the season. However, perform he did!
With two furlongs to run he was still in rear, held up by Jim Crowley -
however, when Jim asked him to switch and come through horses Sarah's
Art took off and sliced through his tiring competitors as they hit the
rising ground. He hit the front just under a furlong out and
ummediately took a length out of the field, and although he was
challenged in the closing stages and idled slightly in front he won by
an easy looking three-quarters of a length.
This was a £20,000 added handicap, one of the features of the day at
Newmarket, and 'Jenson' (his yard name) came into the winners enclosure
to a rapturous welcome from shareholders and racegoers alike. He was
returned the 8/1 winner, although some shrewd shareholders had managed
to snaffle 10/1 on some of the early shows on-course.
Stef was delighted, saying "I love it when a plan comes together!" and
added "I thought we were too far back, and then I was worried Jim
[Crowley] had gone to the front too early, but the horse was simply the
best on the day!"
"He's a cracking little horse, and we did the right thing to give him
that little two month break before bringing him back - he was spot on
today." she said.
I would just like to thank all the shareholders who came along to
support Jenson at the track. It was a super days racing, a brilliant
result and a superb advert for the training skills of our Southern based
trainer Stef Liddiard.
