Trainer Profile

George Foster hails from the Edinburgh region and so is in effect "back home" training just outside the village of Stenton about eight miles from the coastal town of Dunbar.

He was first involved in the local hunting scene before moving to England and gaining a wealth of experience with some big stables in the Lambourn area.

His first move though was to Yorkshire where he worked with the legendary Michael Dickinson.  When Michael Dickinson moved to the Manton stables owned by Robert Sangster, George moved south with his employer.  Things did not work out for Dickinson at Manton and he moved to train in the United States.  George Foster stayed at Manton and worked under both Barry Hills and Peter Chapple-Hyam at the yard.

During his stay there he was involved with numerous top class horses including the classic winners Rodrigo De Triano and Dr Devious.

For a short spell in the mid-90's George took out a licence to train himself and had some success, notably with En Vacances and Lilli Claire.  Things were difficult with a small string though and he returned to work at Manton where he teamed up with Brian Meehan.

He was assistant trainer with Brian Meehan for a number of seasons before the opportunity to move back to Scotland came up and George felt the time was right to set up again in his own right.

He trained near Dalkeith through 2008 sending out nine winners from just 77 runners.  In November of that year the opportunity arose to move to Stoneypath Tower Farm and he has continued to send out winners from his new base through 2009.

Yard Details

Stoneypath Tower Farm is set in the beautiful countryside of the Lammermuir Hills.  Nestled just outside the village of Stenton it is around eight miles from Dunbar and twenty miles from Edinburgh.

Along with the Farm's owners, George has undertaken some major improvements to the yard, improvements that are still on going.  Several barns have been converted into spacious horse boxes and there is room for nearly 30 horses at the stable and it is hoped that this number will increase  over time.

There are three seperate barns used for the stabling and ample paddock space for the horses to be turned out.  It is a very quiet and peaceful area and this is reflected in the relaxed demeanour of both horses and staff at the yard.

George employs a small team of dedicated professionals.  His travelling head lad Mark gained many years experience working in the same capacity with Mark Johnston and is George's right hand man at the yard.

"When you are away at the race track or on business it is a great relief to know that you can leave the yard in capable hands." George says of his head lad.

It is a small yard that doubles as a working farm and as such there is nearly always something happening.  The trainer though is only concentrating on the horses.

"We have put a lot of work into upgrading the facilities here and have a greatv six furlong woodchip gallop.  This season has been a bit of a transition period and once things are finished we'll be looking to really kick on from the foundation we have given ourselves." George told us.
