Trainer Profile

Stef took out her training licence in late 2002 and registered her first winner in January 2003 when Arc El Ciel won at Wolverhampton.  By the end of 2003 she had notched eight winners and that figure rose to 21 in 2004.

Even at this early stage of her career she showed a remarkable ability to maximise the potential of the horses in her care.  The following season she had 25 winners but a remarkable 18 individual horses won races from her yard. The 2005 season also saw her land her first Listed race with Coconut Squeak.

It was early in 2006 that Ownaracehorse first had horses with Stef and we could not have got off to a better start.  Tyzack won his first four races that year and later that summer Stef claimed Siena Star for us.  ‘Sponge’ as he is known has been a remarkable success story for both Stef and Ownaracehorse.

The eight year olds career did not seem to be heading anywhere until he joined Stef.  She showed her talent for re-igniting the enthusiasm of horses and coaxed seven wins and numerous placed efforts from the gelding.

Having established herself as an up and coming trainer the emphasis now at her Lambourn base is now on training quality winners.  In late 2008 Mac Love landed her another Listed winner at Kempton.

Stef really hit the headlines in 2009 when she continued the rejuvenation of the career of the eight year old Mac Love.  The veteran gelding landed three Group Three races for his trainer.  Our own Sarah's Art landed FIVE races in the year, including the popular Greys Race at Newmarket.  This was a very pleasing result for Stef as she had been beaten a short head twice in the race before and set this race as a long term target for Sarah's Art.

In all 2009 saw 19 winners sent out from Great Shefford from just 134 runners - a very impressive strike rate.  2010 saw her score on 21 occasions including more Listed success with The Rectifier.

Her team for 2011 looks to be stronger than ever with some potential improvers in her three year old stock.  These will supplement her older horses and another successful campaign looks on the cards.

Ownaracehorse are delighted to be involved with such a promising trainer who looks sure to make a few ripples in the training ranks in the near future.

In May 2010 Stef moved from her Great Shefford base into new stables in the famous racing village of Lambourn.  She is now training from Felstead Court, the former base of Tom Dascombe.

Having previously had use of just one woodchip gallop Stef now has the whole array of gallops available to her in the Lambourn area.  Her yard is again quite compact but she does have her own walker and paddock space.

Stef believes in a very personal approach to training racehorses and by choice keeps a relatively small number of horses in the yard and these are entirely geared towards flat racing and also the All-Weather.  She believes in knowing all her horses inside-out and getting the very best from each individual - an approach which has delivered Group, Listed and big handicap winners for her in the last few years.  She almost always leads up her own horses at the races, believing that this personal approach pays dividends - and we agree - her results speak for themselves!

However, this individualistic approach does mean that there are a few things to consider when becoming a shareholder in a horse trained by Stef Higgins.  We are unable to guarantee a yard visit to her stables each season and Stef maintains a policy of doing everything to keep horses free of viruses, so shareholders are unable to pat and stroke her runners at the races. We do attempt to organise a visit to Lambourn each season, but Stef does not allow shareholders around the yard during the season, so we have to attempt to squeeze in our visits at the start or end of the season - which is sometimes difficult, and why we cannot provide a guarantee.

Her horses run and win over all sorts of distances, and she is particular capable with the older horses which are in need of rejuvenation.  She also believes in running them - which is why most of our horses with her will race between 6 and 14 times during a  season.

IMPORTANT: Stef's approach to training means that she has a very quiet and compact racing yard.  As a result we are unable to provide yard visits to Felstead Court on the regular basis we are able to with our other trainers.  We attempt to provide one visit a season, but as the yard doesn't lend itself to large numbers of shareholders there is no guarantee that we will be able to provide one, and if we do, it may be for limited numbers.  Stef is a successful and driven trainer, and prefers to keep the horses calm and relaxed and in deference to her wishes (and the success of our horses with her!), we unfortunaltely can't guarantee a visit to the yard each year.  Visits are on an ad-hoc basis and shareholders are informed through their Horse Manager if and when a visit has been arranged.
