Trainer Profile

Derek Shaw was a very successful jumps jockey, based primarily in the North. With many high profile successes, he retired from race riding in order to pursue a career as a trainer.

Derek took out his full training licence in December 1991 having served his apprenticeship as Assistant Trainer to Roy Bowring and then as head lead to Bill Mackie. When assistant trainer to Roy Bowring Derek often doubled up as a jockey on the stables jumping horses.

Since being granted his licence he spent a number of years based in Nottinghamshire, near Newark, but moved to his current yard in Sproxton, near Melton Mowbray in 2009.
The yard gives easy access to a number of racecourses and he has Southwell right on his doorstep.

It is perhaps no surprise then to see that many of Derek’s winners are achieved on the all Weather, though he has tasted success on the turf with a number of very decent horses.

Derek’s biggest success seems to be realising the potential of horses that may have limited chances in bigger yards.  A typical example of this is Pharoah’s Gold a horse whose handicap mark hovered around the 50 mark, but was placed to land 5 races by his trainer and over £20,000 in prize money.  Recently Derek managed to do the same with Loyalty, an 800 guineas purchase which has won twice and been placed six times from only ten runs.

Derek has a friendly and self-contained yard in a quiet part of Leicestershire.  He has a tremendous work ethic and regularly rides all of his horses himself in order to understand his horses in depth.

Yard Details

Derek’s new racing base at Sproxton, Leicestershire, has been developed and improved since he and his wife Lyndsey made the move in 2009.  The yard has its own gallops within the grounds of the yard, and there are excellent facilities for Owners who visit the yard.

Among the facilities at his disposal he has a 1 mile All-Weather gallop and decent turf gallop, in addition to a horse walker, weighing machine, indoor barns and plenty of paddock space, both on grass and artificial surfaces.  The yard also has three separate barns, with plenty of room within the stables.

He has around 28 horses in the yard and these are largely geared towards flat racing, although he has a growing number of jumpers.  Most of his winners are at sprint distances, though he does chip in with a fair number of horses who win at distances of over a mile.
