|2YO Studio Star wins for shareholders on his handicap debut at Newcastle|
|DATE POSTED: 17/08/2014|
We have a real soft
spot for our younger horses at Ownaracehorse, and our investments at
the sales last year started to pay off this week when Studio Star
fought out a battling finish to win on his handicap debut...
Studio Star was having his fourth run of the current season at Newcastle on Friday afternoon, having managed to be placed third in his opening race of the season in a Maiden. It was his second time racing on a softish surface, and that really counted in the gelding's favour as he ran out a head winner on his handicap debut.
Studio Star wins his first race at the fourth attempt - and first handicap
Studio Star was a purchase from the Tattersalls Sales last October and is by the leading first season sire Showcasing. His progeny are proving to be very sharp and capable, and this 2YO son certainly has plenty about him. Trainer Ollie Pears has brought him along nicely in the last few months, starting with a great run at Beverley and then a big day out at York.
However, it is the change in surface, and swapping Maiden company for a handicap which saw this diminutive but extremely likeable young gelding get his head in front for the first time.
Studio Star had plenty of decent horses behind him at Beverley, some of which have gone on to win, and it was the return to softer ground which proved to be so important. He took up the running at the furlong pole under Jacob Butterfield and after going about half a length up, never looked likely to be headed.
Ollie Pears told us "He loved that ground - he really loves to get his toe into the turf, and Jacob [Butterfield] gave him a really great ride. He's not the biggest horse in the yard, but he's certainly got one of the biggest hearts and really tries hard for you."
Jacob Butterfield said "I knew over two out that we were travelling well, and would have enough to get past the leader. He's gone past nicely and then it was just a case of keeping him going to the line. He's done it well and really digs deep when you ask him for his effort."
The 'Star' will now await the handicapper's re-assessment and then Ollie will be sending him back out for a similar handicap in the next fortnight. Shares are now sold out in the 2YO for this season - having recently been available at only £79 one-off cost for the last four months of the season!
Over a dozen shareholders were at Newcastle on Friday, enjoying their champagne celebration afterwards - which all came free courtesy of the racetrack. Ollie is hoping that he can find the right race once again next time - and double up the youngsters earnings.
Don't forget that our 2YO Prospectus for 2015 is now available, and we are already scouring the sales catalogues for our shareholders 2YO winners next season.
